UK Flooded As Two Weeks Worth Of Rain Falls In 24 Hours Leaving Roads And Cars Under Water

2 weeks of rain will hit Great Britain in just three hours today as the country is hit by ferocious thunder and hail storms, the Met Office warns.

A "danger to life warning" has been issued for most of England and Wales today, with weather forecasters predicting serious flooding, blackouts and travel chaos.

After an extremely wet weekend saw flooding hit some areas, millions will have to endure more intense downpours due to the storms today.

A spokesman for the Met Office said:  "Heavy showers and thunderstorms will continue to spread north-east across England and Wales, while also increasing in frequency during the day.

"In a few places, there is the potential for 20mm (0.8in) to 30mm (1.2in) of rain to fall in an hour and 30mm (1.2in) to 50mm (2in) of rain to fall in three hours.

"Hail is also possible, mainly over northern England."

Cars were left trapped in floodwater in Levenshulme in Greater Manchester, this morning while the nearby M60 closed clockwise due to water on the carriageway and an accident.

Meanwhile, a Lamborghini smashed into trees on the M66 near junction one after the driver lost control in standing water.
Forecasters say the average rainfall for July in the north-west is about 90mm.

The area covered by a weather warning for Wednesday includes parts of Scotland, North Wales, north England and the Midlands.

Homes and businesses are at risk of more flooding over the coming days - while lightning strikes could lead to power cuts.

Temperatures will also nosedive to highs around just 18C - a week after the country endured its hottest day ever with a high of 38.7C.
